The Lake Chelan Monster was brought here in September 1812 aboard Captain Chelan’s ship. The Dragon egg was obtained by Captain Chelan as a young man in his childhood home of Fort August Scotland.
Thought to be related to the Loch Ness Monster who is believed to be a female. The Lake Chelan Dragon is believed to be the male, as it has the ability to fly.Local natives to the area have a long running history with encounters with the Lake Chelan Dragon. Legend has been passed down over the years and there is even a historical print of the Lake Dragon. First news accounts claim that on December 2nd 1892 along the shores of Lake Chelan, three men near the area now known as Stehekin were attacked by a Lake Creature that came out from the depths of the lake, grabbed one of the men and flew off with him. Lake Chelan is 55 miles long and said to be 1,486 feet deep. There have been many claims over the years of underwater caverns in the lake, that the lake is connect to other area lakes and some even think there is an underwater connection to the Pacific. A lake of this size has an abundant fish population that could easily sustain such a large animal. Many prominent locals have made claims to having seen the Lake Chelan Dragon throughout the lake recently.
The Daily Picayune of New Orleans, Louisiana, for December 4, 1892, published the following story, perhaps mistitled, “An Amphibious Monster.”
A most extraordinary story comes from Boise City, Idaho, which is said to be well authenticated.
It says that while three travelers were at the upper end of Lake Chelan recently one of them went into the water to bathe. He was seized by the foot by a marine [sic] monster and was being pulled into deep water, when his screams attracted the attention of his companions, who came to his rescue. They pulled him ashore, the monster hanging to his foot.
It had legs and body like an alligator and the head and eyes of a serpent. Between its fore and hind legs were large ribbed wings.
The men tried hard to tear the monster from the foot of their companion, and finally tried fire, which had the effect of causing the animal to rise suddenly into the air, taking its victim along, and finally landing in the lake, where both disappeared from sight.
